I’ve been asked the question ‘Where can I find free online art games that I can use in the classroom?’ I’ve been scouring the internet and below is a selection of free online art games that are great fun and might well link to the projects you teach. They can be a useful extension task if you have computers or iPads in your classroom. Bookmark this blog post as you are sure to want to come back to it!

This game is a great way to consolidate knowledge about hue, saturation, complementary, analogous, triadic and tetradic colours. If your students do not know these terms part of the task can be to look them up. I wouldn’t normally teach about triadic and tetradic colours. You have to match the colours on the screen which is harder than you think. At the end of the game, you are given a score and therefore the excuse to play again as you have something to beat!

Challenge your students to make a landscape with ‘This is Sand’. This would make a great homework if you are teaching a project on landscapes. It is a simple idea: students sprinkle digital sand in layers to create images. They can subtly change colours and download their creations.

Jig zone is an online puzzle site with an art section. Students do the puzzles by dragging the pieces into place. A simple activity to fill the end of a lesson if you only have 5 minutes left and starting something else would be unwise at that point.

‘Quick, Draw!’ is interesting as it asks the question ‘Can a neural network learn to recognize doodling?’ It asks you to add to the worlds largest doodling dataset. You have 20 seconds to draw the items it asks for. I think the learning here is simply opening children’sminds to the idea that a computer can learn.

Auto draw’s main feature is that you start drawing and it tries to recognise what you are drawing. You can then click on the picture and your drawing turns into that picture. There is a useful tutorial if click on the menu in the top left-hand corner under ‘How to’. You can add text and shapes. There are more colours than you mightthink in the colour picker. I think you could use the shapes and colours and text to teach colour theory.

Weave Silk is a wonderfully therapeutic game that involves symmetry. Simply use your cursor on the screen to make symmetrical patterns. It has a slide where you can change to rotational symmetry and colours can be blended. Challenge yourself to make flowers, birds, bats and if you’re feeling ambitious – faces!

If you teach graphics you will love this game. Kerning isthe spacing between letters or characters in a piece of text. This game teaches students to create the correct spacing by eye. Great fun!

‘Shape Type’ is a letter shaping game. Students need to move points on the letter to try and get a pleasing shape to the letter. Super tricky but quite addictive!

TriviaPlaza is a quiz site which has an art section. Be warned – they quizzes are difficult. Suitable for frustrating bright students aged 16+ or for art teachers to test their knowledge!

Is there really a clear cut way to efficiently and effectively use them in the art room? They are often too specific, too vague, undermine points for trivial things or just plain don’t work as a measurement for student growth in art. Many of us are used to analytic rubrics where we break down the criteria of a project into characteristics, or in many cases, specific learning goals or targets presented in the lesson.

These types of rubrics tend to use a grid of 4 or 5 learning targets with various levels of growth listed across the top. They are complex, detailed and in reality, seldom read by students. The feedback they intend to provide is ignored by students because its feels impersonal and conforming.

So, why then, do we punish ourselves with creating them and punish our students by cramming their growth into limiting, specific boxes?

Interview Rubrics: Definition, Templates And Examples

To use measurements like this. We may be encouraged by administration to grade our students with rubrics, even when our craft does not fit neatly into precise and definite boxes. Is there a better way? We need something that feels right for us as art teachers, is accepted by administration, and most importantly, gives our students the personalized and direct feedback they need to grow. If you are looking for that something, the single-point rubric may be your answer.

I recently discovered this idea from The Cult of Pedagogy blogger Jennifer Gonzalez. As a former English teacher herself, she’s experienced the same frustrations in her classroom and toyed with the idea of cutting out all the unnecessary detail within rubrics by simplifying down to just listing the objectives. This allows for areas of concern and excellence to be open-ended and personalized to individual students’ needs.  A single-point rubric is an assessment that fits the levels of choice within art rooms but still provides students with the learning targets of the current project, theme, or unit.

Below is an example I’ve used recently with my middle school students. I highlighted three Studio Habits as my learning targets for our unit and this format easily allowed me to share the objectives clearly with my students as we progressed through our work. I can use this rubric as a student self-assessment tool, a student conference guide or more traditionally as an assessment rubric for my students to receive feedback provided by myself or better yet, a peer reviewer.

Teachers use rubrics to gather data about their students’ progress on a particular assignment or skill. Simple rubrics allow students to understand what is required in an assignment, how it will be graded, and how well they are progressing toward proficiency.

Rubrics can be both formative (ongoing) and summative (final) assessment tools for evaluating written work, projects, oral presentations, or any other class assignment. There are four types of rubrics: checklists, holistic rubrics, analytic rubrics, and developmental rubrics. Teachers, including homeschool parents, can refer to these simple rubric to formulate their own.

These basic rubric ensure that all parts of the assignment are present. They help students keep track of each element of a project. Checklists also let teachers see whether a student fully participated in an assignment, but they aren’t as informative as other rubrics.

Checklists are useful in all subject areas because they’re versatile and easy to understand. As long as each part of an assignment is present, the student receives full credit. An example of a science project checklist includes a column for students to check their work before turning it in.

Checklists are handy to use and easy to grade. They measure participation and completion of a project rather than skills achieved, unlike holistic rubrics.

A general rubric that lists a few levels of performance is a holistic rubric. These rubrics usually combine criteria for a certain score into one level. Holistic rubrics include more information than a checklist and make good formative assessment tools.

Although holistic rubrics are more complex than checklists, they aren’t as helpful for assessing specific skills within a project. It’s possible for students to score between two levels if they achieve some criteria but not others.

An analytic rubric assesses each aspect of an assignment. It awards a designated number of points to each part which adds up to the student’s final score. Projects with analytic rubrics take longer to grade, but they are informative to teachers as summative assessment tools.

Analytic rubrics are useful in any subject in which the teacher needs to monitor discrete skills. Check out an example of an analytic essay for a language arts literary essay.

Kincaid recalls that wh she was a writer for The New Yorker, she would oft be questioned, particularly by wom, on how she was able to obtain her position. Kincaid felt that these questions were posed because she was a young black woman "from nowhere… I have no credtials. I have no money. I literally come from a poor place. I was a servant. I dropped out of college. The next thing you know I'm writing for The New Yorker, I have this sort of life, and it must seem annoying to people."

Talk Stories was later published in 2001 as a collection of "77 short pieces Kincaid wrote for The New Yorker's 'Talk of the Town' column betwe 1974 and 1983".

In December 2021, Kincaid was announced as the recipit of the 2022 Paris Review Hadada Prize, the magazine's annual lifetime achievemt award.

Her novels are loosely autobiographical, though Kincaid has warned against interpreting their autobiographical elemts too literally: "Everything I say is true, and everything I say is not true. You couldn't admit any of it to a court of law. It would not be good evidce."

Kincaid's unique style has created disagreemt among critics and scholars, and as Harold Bloom explains: "Most of the published criticism of Jamaica Kincaid has stressed her political and social concerns, somewhat at the expse of her literary qualities."

As works such as At the Bottom of the River and The Autobiography of My Mother use Antiguan cultural practices, some critics say these works employ magical realism. "The author claims, however, that [her work] is 'magic' and 'real, ' but not necessarily [works] of 'magical realism'." Other critics claim that her style is "modernist" because much of her fiction is "culturally specific and experimtal".

It registers the company with the Securities and Exchange Commission and issues shares to people who want to invest in a specific piece of art.

Securitizing artwork in this way makes investing in art more accessible and the market for the artworks' shares more liquid. Investors can buy and sell shares much more easily than buying and selling the actual pieces of artwork.

Firms such as MasterWorks conduct the research to identify artworks with a good chance of increasing in value, and they oversee the maintenance required to keep the artworks in pristine condition. However, their investors pay a fee for the service, and they don't get to physically take possession of the art.

Income Investments Serving Up Superior Yields

Unfortunately, there is no such thing as an art exchange-traded fund (ETF) or mutual fund. Focusing an ETF or mutual fund on art is impractical due to the illiquid nature of the art market. Art's singularity and inherent scarcity prevent fund managers from simply buying more Renoir or Basquiat paintings to satisfy increasing investor demand. Similarly, if many shareholders of an art fund wanted to redeem their shares, then the illiquidity of the art market would prevent the manager from easily selling the fund's assets.

Firms such as Sotheby's and Christie's that sell art as investments will often cite Art Market Research's Art 100 Index to justify their starting bids. The index, which tracks sales of 100 artists across various regions, styles, and periods from 22 auction houses around the world, can convey a broad sense of how the global market for artwork is performing.

In 2018, Artprice launched its Artprice100 Index, which focuses on blue-chip artists. The company says the index grew at an average annual rate of 8.9% from 2000 through 2017. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 grew at less than half that rate during the same period (which, notably, starts just before the dot-com bubble popped and includes the Great Recession). However, the S&P 500 outperformed the Artprice100 every year from 2015 through 2020. The index outperformed in 2021, and, while the data isn’t out yet, it likely outperformed in the first half of 2022 as well.

There are a couple of problems with these art-focused indices, though. First, they only account for the auction prices of the artworks sold. All of the costs associated with investing in artwork are disregarded. The second problem is a phenomenon called "selection bias." Art market prices don't update every moment or day like the prices of securities traded in the financial markets. And the works that aren't going up for auction are often worth less than the most recent selling price, making the indices’ record returns greater than the overall art market. The indices are biased to only account for the winners.
